Club News

Jim Baldwin
We have received the sad news of the death of Mr James (Jim) Baldwin (Trisett) after a long illness. Jim was introduced to Curlies by Marie Gill and her sister Angela Peake in the 80’s when they used to travel together to dog shows. He had his first Curly, Saxonholme Black Orchid in 1992, bred a litter from her in 1997 and kept a bitch Trisett Black Lily. His third and last Curly was Darelyn Miss Madyson at Trisett with whom he won the RCC at City of Birmingham in 2011. Jim gave tickets in Curlies and had the honour of judging the Curly Coated Retriever Club Champ Show in 2007. He also bred and judged English Setters and had the honour of judging English Setters at Crufts.
Jim was a great photographer and for many years took the photos for the Club Open and Champ Shows. He was also a very talented painter and silversmith.
Our sincere condolences go to his family and close friends.
Funeral arrangements: St Lawrence Church, Congleton Road, Biddulph ST8 7RG on Monday 18 December at 12 o’clock midday.

Champ Shows

Ladies Kennel Association, 10 December 2023
Judge: Mr Michael Jacques (Curlabull)

Breed Specialist Judge, Michael Jacques, had an entry of 59 dogs making 61 entries at LKA. The day was not quite as long as expected, originally we were in the ring after 168 Flatcoats, however they moved us to another ring and this meant that judging started at 12.45, instead of what we thought would be 15.00…. This was very welcome, although one exhibitor unfortunately arrived just as her planned class was being placed…
It was a lovely day, and Michael Jacques’ main winners were:

Best of Breed – Mr & Mrs J & M B Stephens, Ravenho Up Town Girl For Brightmeadow JW
Dog CC – Mrs S Brooks, Infallibles Black Crusader At Kelsmere (Imp Nor)
Reserve DCC – Mrs Selina Parker-Miles, Tengore Mr Moonlight
Bitch CC: Mr & Mrs J & M B Stephens, Ravenho Up Town Girl For Brightmeadow JW
Reserve Bitch CC: Miss D Courtier, Maycourt Take Me To The Top
Best Puppy: Miss D Courtier, Maycourt Take Me To The Top
Best Veteran: Mrs Sandra Mistlin, Maycourt Starman By Crookwood Sh.CM

The full results can be found here on the Show Results page.

Maggie & Jerry’s ‘Fable’, Ravenho Up Town Girl For Brightmeadow JW, is the first Curly to gain her show champion title under the new Kennel Club rules of 5 RCCs & 2 CCs. She is the 6th and final new Curly Show Champion of 2023. Lou Moskowitz is her breeder, and Fable is the first show champion she has bred. Not only that, Fable was shortlisted in the Gundog Group, and is still only 18 months old. Clearly following in her dad’s paw prints….

Sue Brooks’ ‘Kaspar’ Infallibles Black Crusader At Kelsmere (Imp Nor) won his first CC.

Di Courtier’s ‘Pepper’, Maycourt Take Me To The Top, not only won Best Puppy in Breed, she also won her first RCC, very ably handled by Hannah, and gained her Stud Book Number.

Congratulations everyone!!

2 Cummings’ Molokain Enchanted One. Curly Coated Retriever. Quality coat with tight black curls, feminine head which fits with the rest of her, head appealed for wedge shape and parallel planes, loved her eye and expression. Strong neck to well laid shoulders and upper arm, good bone, straight legs, tight feet. Muscular body with positive top line and pleasing rib cage, enough bend of stifle, hind pasterns short and strong, moved accurately.
