Gundog Training with NEFRA, 28 February 2026
Jeannette Findlow and Marion – Roughyeds Gold Stick Cellar, have been on a training day with NEFRA – Northern England Flatcoated Retriever Association. Jeannette said, ‘Marion and I have had a great training day with NEFRA today. Three classes of different standards running with three trainers. NEFRA days are always well organised and very friendly and welcoming. Thanks Steve Burns our trainer today.‘
From the NEFRA website the day focused on, ‘practical gundog training, covering key skills and techniques suitable for working dogs at various stages of their training. The aim is to provide handlers with clear, effective methods that can be taken away and applied in everyday training, whether preparing for the shooting field, tests, or improving general control and steadiness.’
Welsh Junior of the Year & Welsh Veteran of the Year 2025, 28 February 2026
The Welsh Junior and Welsh Veteran is held under the auspices of Cardiff Canine Society, and was attended this year by Maggie and Jerry Stephens.
Maggie told us, ‘Tyson – Brightmeadow Rumour Has It JW, qualified for Junior of the year and behaved beautifully. Tarzan – Sh Ch Brightmeadow Never Say Die JW Sh.CM, came for a rare day out and had just the best day, loving every moment.’
Although it wasn’t a ‘Curly day’, it was however still very much Maggie & Jerry’s day, with their homebred GSD, Soldier – Brightmeadow Who Dares Wins, taking top honours winning Best Veteran In Show.
Congratulations!

Puppy (1):
1. Spraggins’ Tusepo Miss Scarlett, 10m black B, pretty wedge-shaped head, dark expressive eyes, correct ears that she uses well, strong neck into well laid shoulders, super depth of body with slight tuck up, she already has a good spring of rib and depth of chest, balanced profile with a strong level topline, well boned legs, all topped off with a coat of crisp curls, in super condition, she moved out well with an effortless gait, I was very taken with this pup and she must have a bright future, BP & no hesitation in awarding her RBOB too, delighted to see she went on to BPIS3, congratulations.
Junior (2):
1. Pavitt’s Foxriever Fire Cracker 15M black D, nice type, liked his head and good dark eye, slightly better in forechest than 2, strong neck into well laid muscular shoulders, well boned legs down to tight round feet, nails could be a little shorter, moderately angulated hindquarters with good width of thigh, well let down hocks, coat of correct tight curls, I just preferred his head and his rear movement to 2 which was the decider, otherwise two nice youngsters
2. Sutton & Whitehead’s Foxriever Fire Fly (AI) 15M liver D litter brother to 1, many of the same comments apply although this boy is slightly heavier built all through, strong topline, well boned & good feet, nicely angulated all round, correct coat, nice movement in profile but not quite as strong going away as his brother
Post Graduate (1):
1. Sutton & Whitehead’s Foxriever Immortal Spirit 20M black D, lovely masculine wedge-shaped head with dark expressive eyes, strong, slightly arched neck into well-laid shoulders, deep chest with a super spring of rib and short and deep in loin, a strong level topline down to a correctly set & carried tail, well boned legs to good feet, nicely angulated and well-muscled hindquarters, sound mover, BOB

I was honoured to be invited to judge Curly Coated Retrievers at the URC. Thank you to Alison Scrutcher and her hard working committee for the invitation and their hospitality on the day.
On the day we had a reasonable entry for the breed but sadly no puppies.

1. Pavitt and Whitehead. Foxriever Fire Cracker. This 16 month old Dog has a correct wedge shaped head both from front view and in profile. He has a nice dark eye with good ear placement with ears of correct size. He has a lovely expression. His neck is strong and flows into well placed shoulders and good front construction. His topline is good and held well when stacked and on the move. He has a correct turn of stifle and moved with drive.
2. Sutton and Whitehead. Foxriever Fire Fly. A litter brother to my first placing. This liver dog has good eye colour to match his coat. He has a good neck and flows into good shoulders his topline was correct. He has good bone and was in super coat. He is a little bigger than his brother and on the day didn’t show his best looking a little shy in the ring.
Post Graduate (3,1)
1. Sutton & Whitehead. Foxriever Immortal Spirit. This black dog was presented in excellent order. He is an upstanding dog with a good head, strong neck of good length, correct slope of shoulder. He holds his topline well both stacked and on the move. He has a correct bend of stifle and a good amount of bone. He moved well. RBOB
2. Stephens. Brightmeadow Come On Eileen. This two year old bitch is of a smaller build was not in as good coat as first placed however she has a very nice head with good expression. She has a neck of good length, a good shoulder and topline with strong loin. Another who moved well and the placings could easily have been the other way round on another day.
