Judge’s Critique:
I would like to thank the committee and officials of this exceptionally well run super show, the weather was kind and the atmosphere friendly. I have been a Huge fan of this event for many years and was pleased to have been invited to judge here.
“Judge the dogs on the day they say” and overall I was happy with the main winners, there were however some real disappointments. We still need to pay close attention to hind movement, although coats and mouths were very good overall.
Puppy Dog
1st Violeta Borboleta Jacques Du Moulin Du Paulu (Miss Clayton)
11 month puppy with good head and dark eye, lots about him for his age with the development of strength in neck back rib and loin in clear evidence. Good for size with decent feet. Rear end developing nicely. Good Coat Moved well enough when he settled.
2nd Maycourt I’m Still Standing (Miss R C Jack)
Liver male who was my initial winner. Very pleasing head and expression with good shoulder, topline and loin, very good bone throughout. Muscular development in rear. He stands on Good Feet with short nails. He is at this stage a bit loose and was not the most cooperative individual. I have no doubt that time will see him strengthen both physically and mentally.
Junior Dog
1st Krisbos Leonidas With Molokain (IKC) (Mr S T & Mrs E D & Mrs L & Mr E Clack & Clack & Batlle-Hunter & Eddery)
14 Month old Liver male. Awkward age, but I’m sure there is a good deal more to come from this individual. Head piece developing, I would hope and expect that his eye will darken with age. Good front assembly with nice shoulder and upper arm allowing him to reach. Good Feet. He has a good make and length to his rib cage but could be a Little shorter in Loin.
Moved well showing nice extension and strong hind drive. Inconsistent tail carriage. The more he does the better he gets, his tail carriage settles and he grows in confidence. He was certainly better in the Challenge than he was in the Class, He powered around in the challenge and I had no reservations about awarding him the RCC
2nd Violeta Borboleta Jacques Du Moulin Du Paulu (Miss Clayton)
Graduate Dog
1st Firecurl Excalibur (Mrs N Dick)
2yo Liver male. Good overall balance with good head and overall proportions. Coat typically liver but showing a nice curl.
Moved with Purpose showing good rear drive and reach in front. He was well handled, won the class on his movement.
2nd Roughyeds Regal George At Treecave (Miss R & Mr J Arnold & Dobson)
2yo Black Male, A bit rangier than the Winner but not unsimilar in his conformation. Nice overall balance with a strong topline and rear. Coat not so good today. Moved well enough and 1 & 2 could easily enough swap places on a different day.
Limit Dog
1st Ravenho Tallow Tango At Pattonia (Miss F M & Mrs P Valentine)
Nice Type and stamp to this 3yo Male. I would like a Little more substance at this age, But his overall conformation is pleasing. Very Good wedge shaped head with a Dark Eye. Good length and make to neck and nice general assembly. He can be a Reluctant competitor and doesn’t always put his best paw forwards, He moved well enough but more enthusiasm would change his whole persona.
Open Dog
1st Rowancurl Gentle Gaelor (Mrs H M Hodson)
3+ yo Male and One I have judged before and I would remind the owner of my previous comments. Good Head and eye colour nice small well set ears and good length to neck. He has matured nicely since I last judged him, showing adult muscularity and type, I would still prefer a little more covering perhaps just a pound or two to give him that final finish. His Hind Movement can be a little untidy but his side gait and ground covering reach and drive are impressive. He was a worthy winner of the DCC driving around the ring in an impressive manner. Remember though, Speed is not Drive.
2nd Maycourt Heartbreaker (Mrs M Edworthy)
Judge the dogs on the day and today this guy disappointed me. I have previously awarded him top honours and his overall conformation, build and breed type constitute much of what I want in a Curly. He has size and strength and very good general assembly, strength with elegance !. Today he was reluctant on the move and something was just not firing . He could be more animated and happy about his work ,added enthusiasm coupled with his obvious quality would cross the T’s and Dot the I’s.
Special Beginner
1st Foxriever Infinite Spirit (ai) (Mr AJ & Dr AM Kear & Morrey)
Happy Confident chap, whose Owner handler has clearly worked hard with him. Liver Male of 9 months in Good dark Jacket and good curl. Nice headpiece with good length to neck and Shoulder placement, Good ribbing and strength developing in loin. Stands on Good Strong feet.
Moved well enough for age but like many is proud of his tail.
Puppy Bitch
1st Maycourt Island Girl For Breichside (Mrs J Cummings)
In My Humble opinion one for the future. Very Well made puppy who needs time. Melting feminine expression and super wedge shaped head. She is very well made throughout with super shoulder placement good ribbing, correct length and make to loin and well-made croup.
Carried her tail well and when she concentrated showed good reach and drive. I look forward to her future which I hope and think will be Promising. Building a Relationship with a Full Time Handler would help her immensely BP.
Junior Bitch
1st Maycourt Island Girl For Breichside (Mrs J Cummings)
Graduate Bitch
1st Maycourt Cover Shot (Miss D M Courtier)
Liver B 2 ½ YO. The Curly coated retriever is a Slow Maturing breed and this young lady is certainly taking her time. She has a Lovely head and expression and is very feminine. She exhibits type and is well made throughout, with a good shoulder ribbing and loin. She can be a little erratic on the move and needs to concentrate and show off her obvious quality and attributes on the move as well as on the stack.
2nd Roughyeds Gold Stick Cellar (Mr & Mrs A & J Findlow)
Very Feminine and very fit muscular bitch with good overall proportions and conformation. Appealing head with neat ears good length and make to neck into good shoulder ribbing and loin. Moved nicely exhibiting reach and drive.
Post Graduate
1st Maycourt Miss Sweetness At Tengore (Mr B J & Mrs S M Perkins)
Larger than I would like, But feminine wedge shaped head and good dark eye. Good shoulder placement , topline and loin.
Her general assembly and type are very pleasing, she moves well covering the ground and exhibiting good reach and Drive.
Her main detraction for me is her size.
2nd Roughyeds Gold Stick Cellar (Mr & Mrs A & J Findlow)
Limit Bitch
1st Gorchest’s Pendlecurl’s Rising Star At Pepperiever (Imp USA) (Miss V & Mrs N & Mrs L & Ms C Hayes & Biglin & Walton & Chattwood)
Another I have judged previously and when I revisited my comments I am Not at All surprised she caught my eye today. She has the most beautiful head and femininity. Good Length and Make to neck and super shoulder. Good length and make to ribcage and short powerful loin. Nice moulding to croup and one of a few that carried her tail nicely. I know that she can be a little unpredictable on the Move but she showed them today. She drove off pushing from behind and reaching in front covering the ground. She may not be the biggest but she shows great balance economy of movement, and type. I was pleased to award her, her first and in my opinion overdue CC. In The BOB Challenge she was well and sympathetically handled to show her off to best advantage.
2nd Ravenho Midnight Miracle At Saxonholme (Mrs M & Mrs A Gill & Peake)
Another that is typically slow maturing but exhibits great quality and type. She seems to have had a Change of Attitude since last I judged her and she put her best foot forward today. Very Nice overall make and conformation, she moved with some purpose. I am sure given the improvement her time will come.
Open Bitch
I must say that this class caused me some problems. I liked both the first and second although they are somewhat different in type. Movement was the deciding factor here.
1st Roughyeds Audrey Roberts (Mr A & Mrs J Findlow)
6 yo Classical outline, type and make to this bitch, she has what only maturity can bring, Finish. Classic feminine head with good make and shape to neck, shoulder placement ribbing and loin. She was in Top class muscularity and it is obvious she’s no couch potato. She moved very well driving behind and reaching in front, Perhaps not as impressive in side gait as the second bitch, but better behind.
2nd Sh Ch Molokain Hocus Pocus (Mrs E D & Mr E & Mr S T Clack & Eddery & Clack)
3yo Black Bitch in Super coat and muscularity. There is very much I like about this bitch and I predicted she would be made up 2 years ago when she was but a Baby. Her overall conformation make and Type are very much what I am Looking for and her side gait is Impressive. I have had and continue to have some reservations about her hind movement which on occasions is somewhat erratic and untidy.
