Judge’s Critique

A big thank you to the Committee & Members for giving me the opportunity to judge our wonderful unique breed and again for giving me what I considered a superb entry both in quality and quantity. A huge thank you to my ring steward Liz Lacey for keeping the ring flowing smoothly and the young lady who assisted her. I would like to mention a couple of points that were very pleasing throughout the day and that was the improvement in dentition and coats in our lovely breed.

VD – 1, (0a) – 1 Mistlin’s Maycourt Starman by Crookwood ShCM, 7 yr old liver, masculine head with good shape, correct eye colour for coat, neat ears, clean neck into layback of shoulder, deep chest into tuck up, in good jacket, well angled throughout, held topline on the move just dropping off a little at the croup, neat feet, well let down hocks, moved with purpose, pleased to award him RBD & RBVIS. SVD – No entries. MPD – 1 (0a) – 1 Killick’s Overbore’s Double Or Stick, 7 mth black boy, good dentition, nice shape to head with dark eye & gentle expression, good length of neck into shoulder placement, straight front construction, chest developing with tuck up, good head shape with level planes, good topline for one so young, correct tail carriage, a little long in hock, coat just needs to tighten, feet okay, unsettled on the move but just a baby yet. PD – 2 (0a) – 1 Clatyton’s Lizallwood Mr Bojangles, 11 mth liver boy, good head shape with level planes & masculine expression , neat ears, muscled neck into shoulder placement, deep chest with nice tuck up, level topline & correct tailset, medium bend of stifle, muscled 2nd thigh, short hocks, good feet, well off for bone, crisp curly coat, just let down on movement, coming loose & going close, BPD & RBPIS. 2 Killick’s Overbore’s Double Or Stick. JD – 3 (0a) – 1 Stubbs’s Brightmeadow Take Your Time At Densdale, 12 mth black dog, dark eye with soft expression, good head shape, correct bite, clean neck into a straight front construction, chest coming on, nice tuck up, good topline, would prefer a lower tail carriage, in good curly coat, medium bend of stifle, neat feet, good muscle tone, moved out well when settled. 2 Edgeworthy’s Maycourt Heartbreaker, 12 mth black dog, another promising youngster who pushed 1 really hard, may change places, masculine expression with lovely dark eye & shape, good earset, neck flowing into shoulder placement, level topline & tailset, well ribbed up & a straight front with slight tuck up, medium bend of stifle with short hocks, nice bone & neat feet, coat of crisp curls, just lost out to 1 on movement today, just needs to tighten up. 3 Nunn’s Tessmene Southside Fizz, 12 mth black dog, head shape okay with dark eye & kind expression, would prefer a shorter ear, nice length of neck into shoulder placement, good rib with tuck up, well bent stifle with short hocks, little longer in body than 1 & 2, open coat with soft curl, level topline & tailset, difficult to assess movement as a little unsettled. YD – 5 (0a) – 1 Stubbs’s Brightmeadow Take Your Time At Densdale. 2 Boorman’s Tessmene Talk Of The Town, 19 mth liver dog, head of good shape, broader in skull than 1, good eye colour to coat, correct length of neck into layback of shoulder, strong topline & tailset, well off for bone, deep chest, straight front construction, just hope he does not go any heavier over shoulders as he develops, shown in excellent jacket, well muscled throughout, medium stifle with well let down hocks, positive on the move when settled, just preferred touch of elegance of 1. 3 Edgeworthy’s Maycourt Heartbreaker. ND – 1 (0a) – 1 Richards & Flaher’s Tessmene Top Notch By Kagemusha, 19 mth black dog, head a little broad & coarse for me, lovely dark eye & good dentition, nice earset, good length of neck into shoulder placement, well boned up, medium rear angles, good rib with slight tuck up, would like tighter feet, level topline & tailset, coat needs to tighten, more muscle tone would strengthen movement. GD – 3 (0a) – 1 Boorman’s Tessmene Talk Of The Town. 2 Parker-Miles’s Tengore Mr Moonlight, 20 mth black dog, lovely shaped head with level planes, dark eye of good shape, correct earset, neck flowing into layback of shoulder, straight front construction, chest okay for age with slight tuck up, good rear angles with hocks well let down, neat feet, in good coat, well off for bone, just needs to develop 2nd thigh which would help him to be more positive on the move, looks good on the stance & has that touch of elegance. 3 Richards & Flaher’s Tessmene Top Notch By Kagemusha. PGD – 2 (0a) – 1 Parker-Miles’s Tengore Mr Moonlight. 2 Tarelli’s Firecurl Some Like It Hot At Tarrockwood (AI), 2 yr liver dog, broader in skull than 1, correct eye colour to coat, neat ears, masculine expression, clean neck into shoulder placement, nice forechest & well ribbed up with tuck up, strong topline & correct tailset, good rear angles ,nice bone throughout, not as positive on the move today as I would have liked. LD – 2 (0a) – 1 Tarrelli’s Hunter’s Pride Jurajska Gwiazda At Tarrockwood (IMP POL), 3 yr black dog, masculine boy all through, correct headshape of level planes, small dark eye, correct earset, good dentition, strong muscled neck into layback of shoulder, deep chest & well ribbed up, straight front, slight tuck up, super muscle tone, level topline but would like lower tail carriage & tighter feet, medium rear angles, short hocks, well boned legs, moved out well. 2 Driscoll’s Fleetpaw One For Arthur At Hisriver, 3 yr liver dog, head broader than 1, good eye colour & shape, neat ears, strong neck into shoulder placement, slightly heavy over shoulders, well ribbed up, level topline held well on the move, would prefer a little more bend of stifle, short hocks, standing on good legs with well padded feet, well muscled throughout, very workmanlike dog & a happy boy, moved okay. OD – 1 (0a) – 1 Titley’s Fleetpaw Wondering Star, 4yr black dog, seen this boy from the ringside before & not disappointed today, he stood out, well balanced throughout, head of good proportions, small dark eye, neat ears, well muscled neck leading into straight front construction, in super rib with deep chest, slight tuck up, correct angles all through, strong rear quarters which gave him the advantage on the move as he powered round the ring, catlike feet, shown in super crisp curly coat, such a happy boy & showing that touch of elegance that I like to see in the breed, pleased to award him BD & BOS. VB – 4 (1a) – 1 Stephens’s SH CH Brightmeadow Just One Look ShCM, 8 yr black bitch, lovely wedge shaped head, feminine expression with small dark eye, neat ears, correct length of neck into front assembly, deep chest with tuck up, level topline & tailset, nicely balanced throughout, medium rear angles, neat well padded feet, shown in crisp curly coat, good muscle tone for age, short hocks, nice bone, moved out well, enjoyed the opportunity to go over this girl who I have watched from ringside on several occasions & she didn’t disappoint, was pleased to award her BVIS, RBB & RBIS. 2 James’s Brightmeadow Jive Bunny Beg Ex, 8 yr black bitch, unfortunate to meet her sister today but another lovely lady, wedge shaped head with that nice soft expression, full of breed type, very similar to her sister just slightly smaller frame and hasn’t quite got the front of 1, nicely balanced throughout, super tight curly coat, moved with purpose. 3 Spraggins’s Pepperiever Love In The Mist At Tusepo, 8 yr black bitch, good head shape, pretty lady with dark eye & neat ears, neck into layback of shoulder, level topline held well on the move, deep chest with tuck up, medium rear angles & well let down hocks, neat feet, well balanced just didn’t have the drive of 1 & 2, full of breed type & in good jacket. SVB – No entries. MPB – 1 (0a) – Hayes’s Gorchest’s Pendlecurls’s Rising Star At Pepperiever, 7 mth black girl, at the moment very raw but happy & nicely balanced, good head shape & very feminine with small dark eye & good earset, clean neck into front assembly, level topline & tailset held on the move, nice rear angles & short hocks, chest developing, neat feet, in good coat, moved out nicely when settled, happy to award her BPB & BPIS. PB – 2 (0a) – 1 Hayes’s Gorchest’s Pendlecurls’s Rising Star At Pepperiever. 2 Bain’s Crimblescurl Time To Tango, 9 mth black girl, nice feminine wedge shaped head with dark eye, would prefer shorter ears, clean neck into shoulder placement, forechest & rib developing nicely, topline & tailset okay, slight tuck up, well muscled 2nd thigh, coat a little open, good bone, feet need to tighten, didn’t move to her advantage giving her handler a hard time. JB – 3 (0a) – 1 Courtier’s Maycourt Stairway To Heaven, 12 mth liver girl, nice pretty bitch, head of good proportions with correct eye colour to match coat, neat ears, lovely clean neck into front assembly, correct chest for age with tuck up, good angles throughout with well let down hocks, neat well padded feet, in great crisp curly jacket, nicely balanced, would just liked to have seen her a bit more positive on the move. 2 Stephens’s Brightmeadow Take One Look, 12 mth black girl, very feminine head of correct shape with small dark eye, correct earset, enough neck into shoulder placement, well ribbed with tuck up, super topline & tailset , well angulated throughout, short hocks, standing on good legs, in good crisp coat, very busy on the move, unfortunately I would just like a bit more of her to complete the picture. 3 Bain’s Crimblecurl Time To Tango. YB – 3 (1a) – 1 Courtier’s Maycourt Stairway To Heaven. 2 Perkins’s Tengore Sweet Georgia Brown, 20 mth liver bitch, very nervous girl unfortunately on the day, could not do a full hands on assessment only mainly visual, has correct wedge shaped head, would like darker eye, pleasing expression, elegant neck into front assembly, in good rib with tuck up, medium angles throughout, neat feet, coat okay, topline & tailset held well on the move. NB – 2 (1a) – 1 Moskowitz’s Brightmeadow Moondance, 2yr liver bitch, feminine expression, wedge shaped head with level planes, eye colour to match coat, good dentition, nicely put together & well balanced, enough neck leading into layback of shoulder, well ribbed with tuck up, stifles well bent, short hocks, good bone, strong topline & tailset, coat a little light but in good crisp curl, moved okay. GB – No Entries. PGB – 3 (0a) – 1 Mercer & Thomas’s Foxriever Flawless Flame Of Stormacre, 18 mth liver bitch, wedge shaped head with correct planes, good eye colour & shape, correct earset, clean neck flowing into shoulder placement, deep chest into tuck up, well angulated rear quarters, neat feet, level topline & tailset, moved okay. 2 Spraggins’s Tusepo Amazing Love, 2 yr liver bitch, pleasing head of correct proportions, small dark eye to compliment coat, neat ears, correct bite, good length of neck into layback of shoulder, good angles throughout, well ribbed for age, nice topline & tailset, tidy feet, hard to assess movement as would like to have seen her stride out more, just lost out to 1 on this. 3 Rule’s Overbore’s Perfect Storm, 20 mth liver bitch, smaller built than 1 & 2, lovely feminine head of good planes, correct eye colour to coat, neck okay into layback, short in forearm, nice topline & tailset, medium bend of stifle, tight crisp curly coat, well padded feet, rib okay into tuck up, little unsettled on the move. LB – 3 (1a) – 1 Moskowitz’s Blue Willow, 3 yr black bitch, head of good proportions, pretty bitch with small dark eye, neat ears, clean neck into straight front construction, deep chest with tuck up, strong topline & tailset, standing on good legs, well boned, stifles well bent, short hocks, in great jacket, good side extension, just needs to be moved out more to her advantage, liked this girl a lot. 2 Perkins’s Tengore Ruby Tuesday, 20 mth black bitch, unfortunately another that I could not fully assess hands on, feminine wedge shaped head with a sweet soft expression, dark eye, earset okay, nice length of neck into front assembly, well ribbed up with slight tuck up, well angled throughout, nice topline & tailset, coat okay but requires coat on rear quarters to finish the picture, shame she was not happy on the move so could not be fully assessed on movement. OB – 6 (2a) – 1 James’s SH CH Kahawei Teal JW, 3yr black bitch, super feminine head of correct proportions, small dark eye with soft expression, neat ears, clean neck flowing into layback of shoulder, straight front construction, deep chest in great rib with slight tuck up, stifles well bent with hocks well let down, super topline with tail flowing straight off, cat like feet, strong loin and well muscled all through, in excellent crisp curly coat, shown in superb condition, finished with a flowing & powerful movement round the ring, very pleased to award her BB & BIS. 2 Spraggins’s Maycourt Hot Love At Tusepo, 5yr liver bitch, another lovely girl, correct wedge shaped head with a feminine expression and a small dark eye to match coat, good earset, nice length of neck into shoulder placement, straight front, in great rib & tuck up, well muscled rear quarters, good angles throughout, short hocks, well padded feet, in good bone, strong topline & tailset, in great coat with super crisp curls, moved well, shame she came up against 1 today. 3 Stephens’s Brightmeadow Who’s That Girl, 2 yr liver bitch, correct head shape with level planes and eye colour to blend with coat, would prefer shorter ears, good length of neck into layback of shoulder flowing into topline & tailset, in good rib with slight tuck up, well angled throughout, hocks well let down, standing on good legs, well off for bone, in dark liver crisp curly coat, lost out on movement to 1 & 2 a little close going away. Obedience Winner with Trophy

Good to be out and getting involved in the Dog Shows again and I was delighted to be invited to judge all the Classes at the Curly Coated Retriever Club Limited Obedience Show.
Arriving at 10:30 for a midday start or lunch, I realised the timing was not running to plan as the Breed Show was running late and the Obedience was to follow. But it gave me time to watch some of the dogs being routinely judged and catch up with a few friends from Tomlinsons.
After a home cooked lunch at Tomlinsons (which was very welcomed) there were still a few more classes to be judged in breed. It was at this point watching the daylight diminish but it was eventually our time to occupy the ring and get the Obedience started.
Special Introductory
With 10 entries this was the largest class to judge, 9 actually competed.
Main issues were with crooked sits and tight leads, but hopefully this will be rectified next time.
