Judge’s Critique:

I really enjoyed myself today and it is such an honour to judge this lovely breed that has been part of my life for 40 years. Unfortunately, today I did find a few heads that were not characteristic ‘curly’ heads and they were either too wide / broad in skull or too narrow, which is a shame and not something I personally would want to lose in the breed. On a lighter note there was a great standard of puppies coming through, which is great for the breed and a veteran going best in show says a lot about this breed being ‘fit for function’. The coats have also improved on the whole over this time, as I remember pattern baldness being a real issue when I 1st started in the breed all those years ago!, but today, I can report gladly that was not the case. I would also like to thank my wonderful stewards Karen and Stuart for keeping me on track.

Veteran Dog 1,1, (no abs)
1. MISTIN’S MAYCOURT STARMAN BY CROOKWOOD ShCM, Liver, with a lovely wedged head, correct dentition, really nice strong slightly arched neck, moved well effortlessly round the ring. Great crisp curls. RES BEST VETERAN IN SHOW

Minor Puppy Dog 3,3, (no abs)
1. STEPHENS’ RAVENHO LOOKS LIKE TROUBLE FOR BRIGHTMEADOW, very mature black boy, with great head planes, excellent rear angulation and lovely round tight feet. Great jacket for age, BEST PUPPY DOG
2. FINCH’S MOLOKAIN DOING THE DO AT CETGUELI, black, who lost out on the maturity of the 1st winner, particularly in the head, but had good length of neck, strong topline and good tight feet.
3. GREEN’S RAVENHO COMRADAI CYMRO

Puppy Dog 3,3, (no abs)
1. STEPHENS’ RAVENHO LOOKS LIKE TROUBLE FOR BRIGHTMEADOW. (see previous class)

3. GREEN’S RAVENHO COMRADAI CYMRO

Junior Dog 3, 4 (no abs)
1. HODGON’S ROWANCURL GENTLE GAELOR, great crisp tight curls, lovely turn of stifle, great spring of ribs. Moved effortlessly round the ring with drive,
2. STEPHENS’ RAVENHO LOOKS LIKE TROUBLE FOR BRIGHTMEADOW, moved better in this class than the last class as had settled more & made it a hard decision as preferred the head on this dog, but just lost out on overall maturity of the 1st winner, see SEE MPD for further details
3. DOOLEY’S ROWANCURL PULMAN PORTER

Yearling Dog 1,3, (no abs)
1. HODGON’S ROWANCURL GENTLE GAELOR (see previous class)
2. KILLICK’S OVERBORE’S DOUBLE OR STICK very happy black boy, good wedge, with lovely large oval eyes, good length of body, deep chest, reaching elbows and nice flowing tailset. Unlucky to come up against 1st winner.
3. DAVIES & BRADSTOCK’S ELGAR’S ENIGMA TORNADO BETA CON REDANIMO (IMP LTU)

Novice Dog 1,1, (no abs)
1. CLACK’S BAZZY INTI ANTI AT MOLOKAIN, liver,. Correct jacket of crisp curls, Good wedge to head, with large oval eye , strong muscular hindquarters which helped him cover the ground tirelessly, with great rear drive, my only criticism would he is on the small size of the standard.

Graduate Dog 1,1 (no abs)
1. SUTTON’S HOPEALL AND AAT’S BUD SPENCER (IMP GER) DEU JUN CH, black with good wedged head, strong medium length neck, good depth of chest, good feet, however movement needs to tighten up

Post Graduate Dog 2,3 (no abs)
1. STUBBS’ BRIGHTMEADOW TAKE YOUR TIME AT DENSDALE, black boy who made his owner work for this, but his quality shone out and he couldn’t be denied his placing. Wonderful thick mass of tight crisp curls, set on a well balanced body, with great tight round feet

3. TITLEY’S FLEETPAW WONDERING STAR

Veteran Bitch 5,5, (3 abs)
1. STEPHEN’S SH CH BRIGHTMEADOW JUST ONE LOOK ShCM, 9 year old girl that took my eye on entering the ring and didn’t disappoint on closer inspection. Loved her feminine head, sitting on a good reach of neck, and correct topline. Everything in proportion and nothing too exaggerated. Correct and full dentition, I could imagine at 9 years of age she could still do a days work in the field as she is truly ‘fit for function’ and a credit to her owners and her breeding. BEST IN SHOW & BEST VETERAN IN SHOW
2. SPRAGGINS’ PEPPERIEVER LOVE IN A MIST AT TUSEPO, 9 year old with a good bend of stifle and good spring of rib, would prefer a slightly longer neck.

Minor Puppy Bitch 5,5, (1 abs)
1. GILL & PEAKE’S RAVENHO MIDNIGHT MIRACLE AT SAXONHOLME, loved the classic curly head on this bitch and that is what tipped that balance in this excellent class of puppies which was great to see. Also this puppy had a wonderful jacket for her age. Good deep chest and correct forechest, well deserved as she seemed to get even better in the challenge and rise to the occasion and moved round the ring with ease One to watch for the future, BEST PUPPY BITCH & BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
2. STEPHENS’ RAVENHO UP TOWN GIRL FOR BRIGHTMEADOW, another outstanding puppy that is litter sister to the 1st and you can tell, with a gorgeous outline and graceful neck and correct tailset, just as I said above today I felt the 1st winner won on head proportions, but this girl is certainly another to watch for the future. RES BEST PUPPY IN SHOW

Yearling Bitch 1,3, (2 abs)
1. CARLIN’S ETHEREAL GLAZE FROM TORNADO BETA FOR HANESLAU (IMP LTU), black bitch who was a bit nervous and unhappy today in the ring so didn’t show her best. Good jacket, good stifle, nice tight feet. Needs to mature overall, especially in the head.

2. WYNNE-JONES’ CRIMBLESCURL WILDOTTER, liver, with a great curl, but for some reason today the texture wasn’t as harsh as it should be, strong rear quarters, good neck, lovely large eye.

1. Mrs A Wynne-Jones, liver and black, these two were a good matching pair for overall size and outline and put in that extra bit of sparkle after a long day.
2. Mrs JL McKenzie, another liver and black pairing, unfortunately these two were less well matched in size so lost out to the 1st winner

Progeny 0,3 (2 abs)
1. Blue Willow At Ravenho, well what can I say about this very clever mum and her 6 pups shown today, she won her class and her puppies won BEST PUPPY IN SHOW and RES BEST PUPPY IN SHOW, you can’t get better than that! It was a great final end to the day to show what great breeding can do and hopefully to show the breed has a bright future ahead of it
