Judge’s Critique

I always feel it is a great honour to judge a breed club show when voted on by the club members. I would like to say A BIG THANK YOU to the officers and committee for making my day so enjoyable, with a lovely atmosphere round the ring.

Having owned my first Curly 37 years ago, I have always taken an interest in the breed. Living close to Audrey Nicholls’ (Darelyn) kennels I spent a lot of time at shows and shoots, I had a good mentor. I had some good local kennels in my area to learn from, Gladrags, Springcurl, Saxonholme.

1st Mistlins Maycourt Starman by Crookwood ShCm, Liver with a good head and eye, well-constructed throughout with a well-developed chest, good depth, super neck and shoulders, lovely outline, strong hindquarters very sound accurate mover both front and rear, topline held on the move, good coat. Best Veteran

2nd Fielding Roughyeds Romeo Reuben, black with a very good head and eye, again a very good outline, well balanced and constructed. Moved well.

3rd Barbers Pepperiever Pheasants Eye over Blanshard, Black, typical head, good eye and expression, Excellent front, bone and feet, good body properties, strong loin and well-muscled hindquarters, went well.

Minor Puppy (2)

1st Hodson Rowancurl Gentle Gaelor, very promising black puppy, substantial boy, still maintaining elegance, classic well balanced head with dark eye. His coat is coming through well, he has correct shoulder placement and firm topline, correct hind angulation and well muscled for his age, striding out and enjoying himself.

2nd Dooleys Rowancurl Pullman Porter, Black brother to 1st. Another nice puppy, good head, dark eye and kind expression, good neck and topline, good bone and feet, his coat is coming just needs a bit more work and time, his movement was enthusiastic he will settle in time. A close decision.

Yearling (3)

1st Stubbs Brightmeadow Take Your Time at Densdale, Black who is one to watch for the future. A strong upstanding dog with substance, elegance and presence. Good head and ear placement, dark eye, good front and rear angulation. Needs to drop in chest but correct for his age. Moved out well, handler moved and presented him very well. RCC

2nd Edworthy Maycourt Heartbreaker, Another promising black dog, unlucky to meet first today. Excellent head and expression good ear placement, good forechest and depth of chest, tight feet moved well, preferred the neck and shoulder of 1st

3rd Clayton Lizalllwood Mr Bojangles, Liver slighter made still carries a good spring of rib, tight feet, kind dark eye, balanced all through. Just needs to tighten in front.

1st Edworthy Maycourt Heartbreaker

Limit (4)

1st Parker –Miles Tengore Mr Moonlight, Masculine black with a good head and dark eye with gentle expression. Good length of neck with strong topline, correct tailset, good bone and feet. Moved out well, well handled.

2nd Miller and Millichamp Foxriever Solent Sensation at Wightcurls, Also a very good head and eye, well balanced with a good outline, preferred tail set of the winner, moved and showed well.

3rd Tarelli Firecurl Some Like It Hot at Tarockwood, upstanding liver male. Lovely head and expression with correct eye colour. Strong well-muscled rear quarters with well bent stifles, good topline, tailset, good coat and tight curls, not putting all in on the move today.

1st Stephens ShCh Brightmeadow Never Say Die JW SHCM, delighted to judge this black top class dog, and award him the DCC and Best in Show, everything in the right place and commands the ring. He moves with effortless gait with correct reach and drive. Beautifully balanced head, excellent neck well placed shoulders, deep strong body. Lovely tail set and carriage. Super tight coat. Must go down as one of the greats in the breed.

2nd Barbers ShCh Foxriever Picture Perfect for Blanshard, Lovely liver dog, good outline, super balanced head and expression, good neck and shoulders, deep body. Good legs and feet, lovely tail set and carriage. Shown in good coat and condition. Worthy Champion.

3rd Tarelli Hunters Pride Jurajska Gwiazda at Tarockwood (imp Pol), Black and looking at the catalogue I see he is the sire of my puppy winners, I can see where their lovely wedge shape heads have come from. Good shoulder placement, well off for bone, lovely strong body, good spring of rib and strong hindquarters. Moderate bend of stifle, went well.

Veteran Bitch (6)

1st Gill & Peake Kelsmere Kasscade at Saxonholme, 7 year black with great breed type and excellent balance, super head shape with softest expression. Well placed shoulders, deep ribbing, firm through body and strong topline, well angled rear, true movement. Well handled in the heat.

2nd Perkins ShCh Kelsmere Kass of Tengore, 8yrs old black, correct head proportions and good eye shape which give you a typical expression, strong neck eases into well angulated shoulders. Firm topline with strong coupling’s. She has strength over her quarters and correct angulation, she moved well and was in good coat.

3rd Claytons Gamesmere Dancing Queen at Firecurl, another lovely liver veteran. All are credits to their owners. Feminine head, well made throughout, good angels front and rear, in excellent coat, good mover but I would like a little more animation.

Minor Puppy

1st Evans Rowancurl Beachcomber, Black litter sister to the two nice puppy dogs. Lovely head and expression with good topline and angulation, liked her profile and ground covering movement. Really enjoying her time in the ring, her handler really got the best from her standing and moving. Shall watch with interest how she matures. BP

2nd Whitehead Gypsy’s Soul First Lady for Foxriever (Imp EST), Black I had the odd glimpse of a nice puppy, but was giving her handler a hard time. Good make and shape, moved nicely when settled, not head and feet of 1st

3rd Carlin Ethereal Glaze From Tornado Beta for Haneslau (imp LTU), smaller black to the 2 above her. Pretty feminine head with dark eye, good front, chest developing with tuck up, good topline and rear angulation. Another nice exhibit giving her handler a hard time.

Junior (4)

1st Bain & Bain Crimblescurl Time to Tango, black lovely head and eye, well balanced with a very good outline, strong topline and good tail set, very good front, bone and feet. Strong loin, moving very soundly in the heat in good coat, RCC

2nd Parker-Miles Overbore’s Ace of Hearts, Another nice black, good head and eye, very good forehand, excellent front assembly. Well let down in chest strong well-muscled, moved and showed very well for her young handler.

3rd Hayes, Biglin, Walton and Chattwood, Gorchest’s Pendlecurls Rising Star at Pepperiever (imp USA) smaller framed black with a very feminine head and eye, well balanced outline with good front and angulation, what a outgoing girl this is, so happy moving and showing, lovely to see.

Yearling

1st Bain & Bain Crimblescurl Time to Tango

2nd Courtiers Maycourt Stairway to Heaven, this kennel has produced some lovely curlys over the years, liver girl with a nice pretty head of good proportions with good eye to match her coat, nice make and shape all through, given time and she will take some beating, just lacked maturity on the day.

1st Janks Tessmene Tea for Two at Beauport, black making a lovely picture standing, typical curly head, well-constructed body, good ribs and quarters, very animated looking, moved with purpose.

2nd Chattwood & Allmark Tusepo Love Me Like You Do, Thought this black bitch was lovely, I see who her sire is. Everything you would want in a curly. It was her first show so all new to her. I do hope her owners preserve with her as she has great potential. Will watch with interest.

Graduate (2)

1st Claytons Firecurl Georgie Porgie, liver with very good overall construction, upstanding outline, typical head well developed. Good muscle tone moved with good carriage.

Post Graduate (3)

1st Courtiers Maycourt Stairway to Heaven

2nd Evans Kukkasen Keita by Caballus, loved this liver for make and shape, I see the dam of my puppy winner, not in coat which was a pity as I really liked her.

Limit (10) a good class

1st Davis & Margerisons Infallibles Black Velvet at Kandrelli, first class black in excellent condition, well presented coat full of curls and such a steady temperament. Stood as solid as a rock with desirable and attitude. Good head, strong neck and well ribbed body, ideal balance between front and rear, correct depth of ribcage and proper underline. Moved with style and easy action from well-placed hocks and strong feet. BCC told this makes her up.

2nd Carricks Tessmene The Cats Whiskers, Another quality bitch and so typical of the breed. Well balanced throughout with excellent bone and muscle tone, moved out well but with not quite the ease as winner on the day.

3rd Findlow Roughyeds Audrey Roberts, Black very pleasing head and eye, well-constructed, very good outline, strong topline and good tail set, strong well angulated quarters, sound and positive on the move, carrying too much weight.

Open (3)

1st Spraggins ShCh Maycourt Hot Love at Tusepo. Liver very pleasing head and eye. Well-constructed. Very good outline, excellent forehand, strong topline and good tail set, strong well angulated hindquarters, strong loin. In good coat. Moved well close up in the challenge.

2nd Stephens Brightmeadow Who’s That Girl, Liver with lovely head and eye, well balanced with very good outline, strong topline and good tail set. Very good body, front, bone and feet. Moved soundly in good coat, just needs time .

Special Working (1)

1st Findlow Ch All I Ever Wanted Golightly With Roughyeds (imp LVA), Black how lovely to see a full champion in the breed, which is not easy to obtain in any breed. Loved her wedge shaped head, neat eyes, slight tuck up. All the breed standard asks for, coat let her down on the day, would like to see her when in full coat.
