Breed Representation at Autumn Show & Horse Trials, Ardingly, 26 & 27 September 2026
The Autumn Show & Game Fair and the South of England Horse Trials were back together as one fantastic event, at the South of England Showground, West Sussex.
Rachel Arnold told us,
‘It was the last event on the calendar at South of England Autumn Show and Horse Trials with the Working Minority Retriever Club. Representing the Curlies were James Dobson with Kopis on Saturday, Beverley Snudden with Olive on Sunday, and Gill Boorman with Austin for the whole weekend. The Curlies took part in demos with a wider group and met their adoring public. This show is the last one of the year and has a bit of a party feel to it. The demo is the largest one of the year and always goes down well with lots going on, testing the skills of both dog and handler. I wasn’t there this year so Kopis never got to show off his working fully as James doesn’t work him, but Gill, Austin, Beverley and Olive certainly filled the gap. The events start up again at Easter with Thame Country Show in Oxfordshire. In the meantime, all the Curlies that have taken part will now be busy working shoots up and down the country, doing what they love and do best.‘

Best In Show
Judge: Mrs Gutteridge (Qiqern)
Present were Irish Wolfhound, Curly Coated Retriever, Sealyham Terrier, Portuguese Water Dog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dalmatian and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. My choice for BIS was Stephens’ Curly Coated Retriever Brightmeadow Rumour Has It JW ShCEx OSW. He impressed with his calm, steady demeanour, masculine head, strong neck, sturdy well ribbed up body, balanced angles and steady sound gait that covered the ground without fuss. Beautiful coat of dense black curls on his body. Smooth and glossy everywhere.

WoW, this is a male that should be used here in the UK, he has so much to offer. A beautiful put together curly, with dry head, well-fitting dark expressive eye down to clean muzzle housing big white teeth. He scores in body proportions and flows through his solid topline to strength in quarters with firm hocks. Super condition and curled dense coat.
