Critique

Thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge a breed I have owned and shown in the past at this lovely show. I have not judged Curly Coated Retriever for a while so most of the dogs were new to me. I thought the quality of the dogs had improved overall. Some heads were not my cup of tea but body construction was good. A couple of dogs were out of coat, had patches or showed some nervousness and were therefore penalised. I would like to thank all of the sporting exhibitors who made my day so enjoyable.
Veteran Dog or Bitch (4,0 abs) 1 Edworthy’s Sh Ch Maycourt Chase The Ace. I can see why this dog is a worthy Champion. Shown in lovely coat and condition. In profile he presents a very nice outline of our breed and is well balanced throughout. I would prefer a little more elegance through the head and neck but he is an older guy. I liked his shoulder and upper arm angulation and complementary hindquarters which were well muscled. Well off for bone and lovely neat feet. Moved positively and with reach and drive using his tail correctly. Res CC 2 Mr A M and Mrs J Whitehead’s Springcurl Spin Doctor For Foxreiver. Another nice veteran who lost to 1 on shoulders and not quite the enthusiasm on the move. Kind eye. Well put together overall.
Special Show/Working Dog/Bitch( 1,0 abs) 1 Miss K Riva’s Roughyed’s Neptune. In good hard condition. A little too much stop for me but nice eye shape and dark in colour. Crisp coat. Lovely shape of hindquarters which were well muscled. Tail a little gay at times on the move.
Limit Dog (3, 1 abs) 1 Mr B and Mrs E Lacey’s Fleetpaw First Officer. At first glance I was not a fan of his head which is too strong for me and expression a little hard however he has a lovely firm topline with plenty of depth of body and nice spring of rib. He is a strong dog all over including bone. He has a nice turn of stifle and is well muscled. In profile he had a lovely action on the move and gave an impressive show. 2 Misses C and L A Mercer and Thomas’s Elkysar Black Arrow over Stormacre. More my type of head with lovely wedge. More elegant dog than 1 but lost out on the move and in front.
Open Dog (2,1 abs) 1 Mr J and Mrs M B Stephens Sh Ch Brightmeadows Never say Die What can I say? He came into the ring determined to take on all in front of him and he did easily. Such a stunning example of our breed that we have been waiting for for a while. I am sure he will be a credit to promoting our Curlies in the big ring soon. Just my type. Possesses the most beautiful head and good ear set. I loved it. Strong but elegantly put together with balanced outline and so well constructed. Coat is of a super texture and he is presented flawlessly. Best of feet with strong pasterns and well boned legs. Moved around the ring with purpose, reach and drive. Tail wagging as he went. What is there not to like about him. Good luck for his future. CC and BOB
Puppy Bitch (1,0abs) 1 Mr and Mrs D Bett`s Talismanic Star Appeal At Kelsmere What a beautiful outline on this puppy. Not the biggest but she has enough bone at present for a bitch. In really super coat for her age. Very feminine correct head with well shaped eyes. I would like to see her at later stage in her career. Best puppy
Limit Bitch ( 4, 0abs) Very mixed class of type and condition. 1 Mr B J and Mrs S M Perkins Kelsmere Kass of Tengore So pleased to be told that this bitch was made up to a Sh Ch today and well deserved too. She stood out in this class for type and quality. Did consider her for BOB but could not quite out move the dog on the final run. In profile she has such a lovely reach and drive using her shoulders well. In super crisp coat. Feminine but with all the substance present too. Only critical point would be to have her nails a little shorter. A beautiful example of the breed. CC 2 Misses C and L A Mercer and Thomas`s Lilholms Champagne a l`Orange Among Cawdowen Larger type of bitch who has loads of substance. Excels in depth of brisket and spring of rib. Carrying too much weight for me on such a frame Possesses a lovely wedge shaped head but I would like her ears a little smaller. Nice angulation front and rear.
Open Bitch(3.0abs) 1 Miss D Courtney`s Maycourt Hunky Dory Lovely feminine, liver bitch. Neat ears well placed. She has a decent front and possesses and strong topline and super spring of rib and correct depth of body. In good coat and has crisp texture. Well balanced throughout and moved well going round the ring with animation. Res CC.
