Judge’s Critique:

First I’d like to thank the committee for the opportunity to judge my 1st set of CCs in this breed. I first judged Curlies in 2006 and they are a breed I hold very close to my heart. Thanks also goes to my stewards for their hard work and to my exhibitors for their support and trust in my judgement.
The pleasure and honour was all mine.
It was a beautiful entry and some of the classes caused me to make difficult decisions. I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment to go over these beautiful dogs. The one issue that I feel should be addressed is that some exhibits have a lack of a gentle tuck up. I feel that this is distinctive to the breed and allows for an air of elegance which makes them distinguishable from other similar breeds. Also, although rear movement has improved over the years there is still room for improvement.
It was a strong dog lineup.

Special Beginners Dog 3(1abs)
1st Suttons KELSMERE KADDINGTON
6 year old strong and upstanding. Very nice dog, his head is strong with correct shaped skull, gentle stop and correct wedge to head. His eyes are very dark and of correct shape and placement. Moderate length to neck which was strong and muscular. Shoulder well laid back, strong and powerful with well pronounced forechest. His forelegs are well under him and straight with tight feet. His body is well developed with a good spring of rib, level topline, however would prefer a little more tuck up. His hindquarters are strong and muscular with ample width to thigh and his tail is set on correctly. His movement was energetic however he did move a little close behind. He was in good coat.
2nd Greens RAVENHO COMRADI CYMRO
14m old. A tad lighter built dog. He had a correct head of good planes and typical wedge with dark eyes set obliquely and of correct shape. His muzzle was of correct dimensions. His neck was not as strong and powerful as 1. His body was reasonably well developed with a good spring of rib and he displayed a deep chest. His hindquarters where in relation to his front and he showed a moderate bend of stifle. I would have liked to see more substance and bone however he is only young and plenty of time to develop.

Veteran Dog 1
1st Mistlin MAYCOURT STARMAN BY CROOKWOOD SH CM
9year old, upstanding male oozes breed type and has maintained his underline.
Correct wedge shaped head with slight stop, good over the brows. Parallel head planes and good depth to muzzle. Oval eye set obliquely and dark. Strong neck of moderate length with a slight arch with adds to the elegance of this breed. Well laid back shoulder which are strong and powerful, straight front and lovely tight feet. Super depth to chest with excellent spring of rib. I liked his depth of loin which was strong but not too deep. Would have preferred a slightly more level topline but this did not distract from his overall quality. Strong, well-muscled rear with moderate bend of stifle. On the move he was effortless and covered the ground well. I had no hesitancy in awarding him the RCC as he was so unfortunate to come up against the CC winner in such good form.

Junior Dog 4
1st Sutton & Whitehead FOXRIEVER GREY GHOST
Just 1 year old so only just out of puppy. Upstanding young man, good basic framework allowing plenty to grow into. Beautiful head, correct wedge shape, correct oval eye could enjoy a slightly darker eye even for a liver but still within standard. Good length to neck with well laid back shoulders which are strong and muscular. Forelegs straight with good bone ending with tight round feet. He has a deep chest with well sprung ribs, correct amount of tuck up. Strong and muscular hindquarters with a moderate bend of stifle. Correct crisp curls of good quality. Moved well with drive.
2nd Finch MOLOKAIN DOING THE DO AT CETGUELI
14m Black , another one with the correct wedge head and dark well shaped eye. Straight front with correct tight feet. He has well laid back shoulders and deep chest with correct oval rib. He has a well muscle rear but would prefer a better bend of stifle. His movement was effortless.
3rd Huckle FOXRIEVER STORM CLOUD

Graduate Dog 3(1abs)
1st Sutton KELSMERE KADDINGTON
This was my Special beginner’s winner.
Hi movement was energetic however did move a little close behind. He was in good coat.
2nd Brendon TESSMENE TORNADOS TRAIL
Well balanced and well-muscled up. His head is of correct wedge and in proportion, his eyes are of good colour and shape. Well placed shoulders and forelegs well under him. His body is well developed however a little deep in loin at the moment. He has a good bend of stifle with strong hindquarters. His movement was a little erratic, as he was a bit of a handful, however he did possess a very good coat of crisp curls.

Postgrad Dog 2
1st Finch MOLOKAIN DOING THE DO AT CETGUELI
This was my 2nd in junior.
14m Black another one with the correct wedge head and dark well shaped eye. Straight front with correct tight feet. He has well laid back shoulders and deep chest with correct oval rib. He has a well muscle rear but would prefer a better bend of stifle. His movement was effortless.
2nd Janks TESSMENE TEMPEST SKY AT BEAUPORT
Really liked this dog and there is a lot to like about him. Very nice head of correct shape, showing moderate stop. Correct oval eyes of strong colour set obliquely. Moderate length to neck of good strength. Well laid shoulders of correct angulation, straight forelegs, would prefer more bone, he has tidy tight feet. His body is well developed with good depth to chest and correct tuck up. His hindquarters are strong with a good bend of stifle. He is balanced throughout. My dilemma was that he was rather small, the standard calls for 27”. On another day in different competition?

Limit Dog 4
1st Clayton LIZALLWOOD MR BOJANGLES JW
Well balanced throughout and in really good coat of deep tight curls you just had to run your fingers through. His skull was broad with just a little more stop than is required. He has a good depth to muzzle and his eyes are of correct shape and colour. His neck is strong and powerful going into well laid shoulders that are also strong and powerful. His forechest is well developed and his forelegs straight. His body is well developed with a deep chest and slight tuck up. He has a level topline. Well-developed hindquarters with moderate bend of stifle. He was in excellent coat and one of the best movers today. Strongly considered for top honours.
2nd Hodson ROWANCURL GENTLE GAELOR
Another upstanding male, very good head of correct shape. Eyes set obliquely and of good colour. His forechest was well developed with correct depth to brisket. His body was well developed. Length of 2nd thigh slightly overlong with moderate bend of stifle. He moved well showing good extension.
3rd Stubbs BRIGHTMEADOW TAKE YOUR TIME AT DENSDALE

Open Dog 5 (1abs)
1st Stephens SH CH BRIGHTMEADOW NEVER SAY DIE JW SHCM
Well, what a showman! Very well balanced throughout. Strong masculine head of correct shape and dimensions. Perfect oval eyes, correctly set and midnight black. Correct stop and his muzzle was of correct depth and length to balance the whole head and finish the picture. His ears were of perfect shape and size with a real feel of quality in them. His slightly arched neck was strong and powerful and his shoulders well laid, quietly muscled up. His forelegs were straight and strong with tight feet. His body is well ribbed with a level topline ,however I did ponder over his depth of loin, I would have preferred a little more tuck up. His hindquarters are broad throughout with plenty of muscle and he has a good bend of stifle and correct tailset. His coat is deep and well curled. His movement was fantastic. Effortless with strong drive and great extension. It was tight between him and the Veteran dog but that final run showed his true ownership of the ring and I was delighted to award him the CC.
2nd Edworthy MAYCOURT HEARTBREAKER
Another good dog, I believe is the son of the winner.
Typical wedge head with correct eye shape and colour. Well laid shoulder, well-muscled up. Straight front with good bone. Correct well developed forechest and spring of rib. Well bodied up with slight tuck up. Strong hindquarters with good bend of stifle. He also moved well without effort. I hope he follows in his father’s paw steps.
3rd Davies & Bradstock MAYCOURT KASHMIR CON REDANIMO

I was very pleased with my bitch line-up and wished I had another set of CCs

Special beginners Bitch 1
1st Janks TESSMENE TEA FOR TO AT BEAUPORT
3year old. Nicely balanced. Typical head with correct shape and slightly lighter eye set correctly. Ears set just above eye. Good layback of shoulder with strong bone and tight feet. Depth of chest to elbow with full spring of rib. Good width to thigh however would prefer a little more bend of stifle. In lovely condition with correct coat curl would prefer a little bit more of her throughout.

Veteran Bitch 2
1st Whitehead SH CH KELSMERE KAMANA FOR FOXRIEVER SHCM
9year old and really not looking it at all!. Quality bitch of substance but without any lumber.
Lovely head with the correct wedge shape and moderate stop. Lovely dark eye of oval shape and set correctly. Warm expression. Medium length to neck flowing into well laid shoulders which were still muscular, pronounced forechest with correct front angulation. Forelegs neatly under her and tight feet. Super depth to chest with slight tuck and maintained her level topline. Well-developed rear with muscular thigh of good width and a moderate bend of stifle. Tailset correctly and of good weight. Her coat was in good condition with appropriate tight curls and she moved with steady footfall showing good extension.
2nd Clack MOLOKAIN ILUSIA
8 year old. Desirable head type with correct shape and dimensions. Oval eye of dark colour set obliquely. Correct straight front of good bone, feet could be tighter. Well bodied up with a deep chest however would have preferred a little more tuck up. She was a little slow on the move today but it was very warm in the hall.

Puppy Bitch 3
1st Perkins MAYCOURT MISS SWEETNESS AT TENGORE
Just 9m old but a substantial bitch. A lot to like about her. Typical head with the desired wedge shape and stop her eyes are dark and soulful. She has a good length to her neck
2nd Courtier MAYCOURT TAKE ME TO THE TOP
Litter sister to 1. Very similar in many respects. Very much the classic Curly shape. Deep chested with amount of tuck up. Correct spring of rib. Hindquarters in proportion to her body with good bend of stifle. Well balance throughout. Not quite the quality of coat as the winner today and not quite the overall substance, however not to be dismissed for the future.
3rd Courtier MAYCOURT COVER SHOT

Junior Bitch 7
1st Carrick TESSMENE TICKETY BOO
Well what a star in the making. Just 12m old and already has star potential. Classic head with correct angles and stop. Darkest of eyes of oval shape and correctly set. Elegant but retaining breed type. Good reach of neck but with gentle arch and well-muscled. Correct front assembly with pronounced forechest. Strong, straight forelegs with ample bone and tight feet. Deep chested with good spring of rib. She holds her topline level and retains a slight tuck up. Her hindquarters are well developed with good width to thigh and displays a moderate bend of stifle. She was in the best of condition that youth allows and tight crisp curls. She moved with a powerful gait which belied her age. Absolutely one for the future. I seriously considered her not just for the RCC but the CC.
2nd Clack MOLOKAIN HOCUS POCUS
Another very good bitch, unfortunate she should meet the winner on this occasion. Typey bitch in the hardest of condition. Good solid build without coarseness. Classic head with dark oval eye. Well placed shoulders and deep chested, well bodied up and strong hindquarters with correct bend of stifle. Moved well with drive.
3rd Stephens RAVENHO UP TOWN GIRL JW

Graduate Bitch 2(1ABS)
1st Whitehead FOXRIEVER RITUAL FLAME
14m old. Very stylish. Gentle head and expression with correct. Head of correct proportions and angles with dark well set eyes. Good reach of neck, smoothly set on well laid back shoulders. Well-developed forechest. Deep chest and straight forelegs. Well-developed hindquarters, tail set on correctly. Thigh well developed and muscled. In hard condition throughout. Very nice type. Just not so confident on the move I hope this will improve with time.

Postgrad Bitch 4(1abs)
1st Parker-Miles OVERBORES ACE OF HEARTS (AY1)
Lovely mature bitch of substance but retaining her femininity. Classic head in proportion. Correct wedge shape with good stop and dark eyes. Ample length to neck which is strong and muscular. Well-developed forequarters, well-muscled up with correct angulation. Forelegs well under her, feet could be tighter. She has a deep chest with moderate tuck up easing into strong hindquarters and moderate bend of stifle. Her coat was of very good quality with tight curly and texture. She moved with power and drive. Pleased to award her the RCC
2nd Janks TESSMENE TEA FOR TWO AT BEAUPORT
This was my special beginner winner
3 year old. In lovely condition with correct coat curl would just prefer a little bit more of her throughout.
3rd Whitehead GYPSYS SOUL FIRST LADY AT FORIEVER (IMP EST)

Limit Bitch 1
1st Perkins TENGORE RUBY TUESDAY
Oh how I loved this girl. Full of quality. Lovely head wedge shape with dark oval eyes. Moderate length to neck, which was strong and muscular. Correct front assembly with enough forechest. Deep in chest with good spring of rib. Level topline but would have preferred a little bit more tuck. Well-developed hindquarters with correct bend of stifle. The very best of coats consisting of deep thick curls. When she moved she glided around the ring, however she was uncooperative whilst being gone over. I do hope she grows out of this.

Open Bitch 6(1abs)
1st Carrick TESSMENE THE CATS WHISKERS
This girl oozes breed type, quality and that magic ingredient that sets them apart. Her overall balance and stature is to behold, her proportions are spot on. Her head is classic wedge displaying strength and femininity. Her eyes are dark with a soft expression. Her neck is both strong and elegant which melts into her beautiful front assembly which is neither coarse nor cumbersome. Her forelegs are straight and strong boned with exceptionally good pasterns. She displays a deep chest which gently rises to her loin and joins her well-developed hindquarters which shows a well-muscled thigh. Her topline is faultless. She was in excellent coat of crisp curls. She moved effortlessly and with style covering the ground with ease. Delighted to award her the CC after very serious deliberation over her kennel mate. In the challenge for BOB she just oozed that bit more finesse.
2nd Mercer & Thomas TYNESIDES MY HEART WILL GO ON TO STORMACRE (IMP USA)
Strong and well balanced. Correct head of good proportions with dark eyes. Decent length to neck which was strong and muscular. Correct front assembly with straight, strong boned forelegs and tight feet. Well bodied up with correct spring of rib and level topline. Tail set correct. Strong hindquarters with good bend of stifle. In the best of coats and condition.
