Critiques

United Retriever Club (Open Show), 12 February 2025
Judge: Ellen Sutton

I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to judge Curly Coated Retrievers today and must express my thanks to the United Retriever Club Committee for their invitation, it was a real honour to be asked. I must also thank the friendly and very experienced stewards who supported me today and ensured that the show itself and particularly my ring and paperwork were all in perfect order.

Class 41 Puppy 0 entries

Class 42 Junior 2 entries/1 absent –
1. Kandrelli Northern Pintail. 16month black bitch. Overall I really liked the size and stamp of this young bitch. She has a lovely correct head, good dark eye and a very pleasing front and spring of rib. Showing an excellent coat and presented in beautiful condition. Good depth of chest. At this age she is still developing and at the moment she is a little long in tibia/fibula which is making her move a little close behind – I am sure that this will correct itself as she matures and develops more muscle and strength in her hindquarters, she already has a good width of thigh. She does present a pleasing picture when stacked, and with a little more confidence on the move she will complete the package to make a very nice dog.

Class 43 Post Gradutate 3 entries/1 absent –
1. Foxriever Storm Cloud. 2.5 year old black dog. This boy fills the eye and was immaculately presented today having a superb coat of tight, crisp curls and moving with confidence, reach and drive. A powerful, masculine physique, well-muscled and of excellent size and type. Correct wedge-shaped head with good ear set and size. Intelligent expression and great angulation both front and rear. Good spring of rib and a super topline. This dog is especially confident, relaxed and happy on the move; he is very well equipped to do the job he was bred to do and I was very happy to make him my BOB today.
2. Maycourt Miss Sweetness at Tengore. 2 year old black bitch. A lovely bitch of good size and type showing another superb crisp, curly coat. Feminine wedge-shaped head. Good front and excellent tight, round feet. Well-developed spring of rib and lovely topline held on the move. A really nice overall picture but not quite covering the ground or showing the confidence on the move as first place.

Class 44 Open 4 entries/2 absent –
1. Tengore Ruby Tuesday. 4 year old black bitch. Very feminine and slightly smaller stamp of a Curly bitch who presented a very pleasing balanced picture. Correct head and ear set with a lovely dark eye. Well sprung ribs with a short, powerful loin. Lovely tight feet. Moved well when settled. Best Opposite Sex and RBOB.
2. Kandrelli Northern Pintail.

Group 3 – Clack, Clack, Batlle-Hunter & Eddery’s Krisbos Leonidas with Molokain (IKC). 9 mth old Curly Coated Retriever dog. One I have done well for previously. He pleased for type and has the degree of elegance required for the breed. Slightly arched neck of correct length to balance, level topline, pleasing rib development for age, well muscled loin and tail correct for both set and carriage. Masculine head of good proportions and planes, expressive eyes and scissor bite. Opens up well on the go around with good self carriage. Good quality coat.
