Nigel told us:
Some initial reflections on judging at the Finnish Curly Club Championship show. First of all what an honour and a privilege.

The show is part of a full weekend held at a remote residential ‘youth camp’ with around 80 members staying over. On the Sunday night we joined for dinner but left before the communal sauna (typical restrained Brits!)

Nearly sixty dogs were entered with other curlies including some very young unentered puppies. The show process is very different: dogs can only be entered in one class, champions have their separate class, critique for every dog dictated immediately having gone over the dog and available on line, our stewards work hard but more is involved in Europe – being aware of dogs previous wins so able to determine what they can be awarded.

Two of several highlights ( more to come in Yearbook article): a pet dog class before the main show for those dogs who would not be able to enter the champ show e.g. dog without two testicles – each still gets a critique, best dog, best bitch and best in show declared; the oldest veteran dog and bitch entered are each declared a Super Veteran and given a rosette.

(1) Riva’s – Tessmene Rock That Look (Curly Coat Retriever)
Very smart young man who presented a nice strong outline, pleasing head of good shape with a lovely eye, correct ear-set.
Clean slightly arched neck smoothly ran into his good front assembly & straight forelegs, I liked his lovely feet.
Good depth to chest & spring of rib, pleasing top-line, strong hindquarters, moved ok.

1. Green and Green’s Ravenho Comradai Cymro A two-year-old black boy who like most Curly’s at this age still needs time to mature. He has a super very attractive head, masculine but not overdone, good dentition, ears and eyes. He has a good length and reach of neck, giving him the elegance required of the breed. He is balanced fore and aft, although I would prefer slightly more angulation both ends, this will probably come with maturity when his growing has completed. He stands on well boned legs and tight feet. He has a strong core with short loin and moderate tuck up. I would have preferred a straighter flatter croup as this spoils his overall outline and makes his tail-set look low. I made note however that today he was not with his usual young handler who is sympathetic to his needs, and is able to bring the very best out of him.He is certainly a nice size and is topped with a full coat of tight curls. I am sure time will see him reach his full potential. Moved out well in the heat of the day. BOB

1st EDWORTHY’S BRIGHTMEADOW MAN OF STEEL (6m D)
Two good youngsters here, won this class on just being more together than nice wedge shaped head. Correct proportions in head, ears set correctly. Neck slightly arched of moderate length. Chest Deep. Nice level topline held well on the move. Needs to muscle up and get strength in the rear. Moved well in profile a little untidy coming to. Best Puppy
2nd HARRIS’ BRIGHTMEADOW WISH COME TRUE AT DREAMCURL (6m B )
A lot of similar virtues certainly clear these were litter siblings. Slightly shorter in body than 1. Correct head proportions. Neck medium and arched. Topline level and held well. A little bit raw at the moment.

1st EDWORTHY’S MAYCOURT HEARTBREAKER (3yrs D)
Won this class on accuracy of movement, really well muscled up and super drive from the rear. Correct head shape, neck strong and slightly arched. Topline level. Good tail carriage. Super coat, crisp curls. My notes say best mover! Best of Breed
2nd DAVIES & BRADSTOCK’S MAYCOURT KASHMIR CON REDANIMO (3yrs D) Super head, correct proportions, and good neck. Nice Deep chest and well sprung ribs. Slight tuck up. Not as strong in rear as one. Would like a cleaner movement coming to. Nice Topline and correct coat. RBOB
3rd COURTIER’S MAYCOURT TAKE ME TOP THE TOP
