Thank you to all those who attended. All the candidates passed the MCE, and all were able to have hands on experience and go over four Curly Coated Retrievers. It was a great success and we’ve received fabulous feedback.
We’d like to thank our speaker, CCRC Chairman and CC Judge, Nigel Spraggins. We’d also like to thank Maggie & Jerry Stephens and Tarzan, Harriet Barber, and Diane & Matthew Bain. Not forgetting, of course our club Breed Education Co-ordinator, Leslie Bain for his fabulous organisation while facilitating this event.

Don’t worry if you were unable to attend the Breed Appreciation Day in Scotland, we have already arranged another one….!

We have two days of Gundog Training coming up in June and July hosted by our Northern Training Hub!
They are taking place at the Lingholm Estate, Keswick, Cumbria on Saturday 7th June 2025 and Sunday 20th July 2025, meeting at 9:30am with sessions being tailored to the abilities on the day. We are grateful to the Lingholm Estate for allowing us to use the ground.
These sessions are open to all Curlies, from those who have never done any Gundog Training to those with more experience. We do ask that you bring your own lunch and chairs.
If you are interested in attending, booking is essential and you can do this via Heather Barber on Messenger or by calling/texting on 07811670908.

CCRC South West Hub Gundog Training
The first session of 2025 took place on 7 May 2025, with Gundog Trainer Jill Gardner, in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. In attendance were Nina & Wren, Rachel & Kopis, and Rachel & Gunner (6 months on the day) joined with Di spectating. Nina told us, ‘Unfortunately Heather & Iris were unable to join us due to Iris being in season. We did a series of steady tests, straight retrieves, memory retrieves, retrieves with obstacles, and even a blind. The pup did amazing and we all went away with individual tasks to work on ready for next session on the 11 June when hopefully Iris and H will be back with us.‘ All welcome on 11 June 2025, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, £25 per session – please contact Nina Parker-Miles.

Pet Blood Bank UK
Anne Wynne-Jones said, ‘Otter, Cherry and Freda attended a Pet Blood Bank session the other day. Otter and Cherry both gave a full donation ~ 0.5L and got their little bandanas and a bag of treats and toys. Freda was a bit too Freda and couldn’t quite get it together
Curlies are in demand as they are O negative blood group which is the universal donor and can be given to any dog in an emergency.’
Well done all of you!

Critiques

Scottish Kennel Club –  All Breed Championship Show, 15 May 2025
Gundog Group
Judge: Mrs Christine Schofield
I was honoured to be invited to judge the gundog Group at The Scottish Kennel Club All Breed Show 2025 and I sincerely thank the Secretary and Committee for the kind hospitality I received.
I shortlisted nine dogs, and could have easily extended this to fifteen, so hard decisions had to be made. It was a sizeable ring and many of the dogs made full use of it.
I considered the stylish and effortlessly moving Hungarian Vizsla, the beautifully balanced Pointer, the striking Curly Coated Retriever, that just lost her verve on the final look, the handsome and free moving Welsh Springer, the rustic Spanish Water Dog that showed brisk movement and was in such fabulous coat.

I thoroughly enjoyed this appointment. My thanks to the Officers and Committee of SKC for the invitation and for their superb organisation. The stewards and helpers on the day did a fantastic job. You are to be applauded.

Class 198. Post Graduate Dog, Entries: 5 Absentees: 0
1st 7538 – Brightmeadow Rumour Has It JW (Mr J & Mrs M B Stephens). A strong and upstanding dog who carries a thick coat of crisp tight curls with undercoat. He is impressive on the stack and is longer than tall. Well laid shoulders and good length and return of upper arm. Deep chest, well sprung ribs, level topline but steep in croup and tail set too low. Wedge shaped head, small ears, dark eyes. Moves on an effortless stride. BD.
2nd 7534 – Firecurl Excalibur (Mrs N Dick). A well made dog with good front angulation, strong neck and good ribbing. He doesn’t have the quarters of the winner. Moved OK but a tad close behind.
3rd 7529 – Krisbos Leonidas With Molokain (IKC) (Mr S T & Mrs ED & Mrs L & Mr E Clack & Clack & Batlle-Hunter & Eddery)
Class 199. Open Dog,Entries: 3 Absentees: 0
1st 7528 – Bazzy Inti Anka At Molokain (Imp Cze) (Mr ST & Mrs ED Clack). A strongly made dog with plenty of bone and substance. Level topline and good underline. Good head, dark eyes set on obliquely, moderate reach of neck, muscular quarters, tight feet. Good tight curl to his coat. Has a powerful gait. In the challenge for best dog I preferred the slightly more elegant appearance of the post grad dog. RBD.
2nd 7537 – Rowancurl Gentle Gaelor (Mrs H M Hodson). I liked his size and he has a handsome head with large, oval eyes set on obliquely. Well constructed all through but doesn’t have the quarters of the winner. Well coated. Moves well
3rd 7536 – Overbore League Of Their Own (Miss G Duff)
Class 200. Special Beginners Dog, Entries: 1 Absentees: 0
1st 7524 – Roughyeds Regal George At Treecave (Miss R & Mr J Arnold & Dobson) He is of good make and shape but needs to fill in front. Wedge shaped head, kind eye and soft expression. Good depth and well ribbed back. Could use a bit more bend of stifle but has nice wide hips. Moved well.
Class 201. Puppy Bitch, Entries: 2 Absentees: 1
1st 7532 – Maycourt Island Girl For Breichside (Mrs J Cummings) What a delightful puppy. I loved her oh so pretty head and beautiful eyes. She presents a great outline, has a broad chest, plenty of forechest, great depth, ample spring of rib and wide quarters. Stands on round, tight feet. She has wonderful forward reach on the move and a terrific tail action. BP & RBB.
Class 202. Post Graduate Bitch, Entries: 2 Absentees: 1
1st 7530 – Epsilon Adhara at Molokain JW (Mrs ED & Mr E & Mr ST Clack & Eddery & Clack) She has a balanced outline, great forechest, strong bone, neat feet, carries a level topline and has a correct underline. Typical head, short ears, moderate reach of neck. Moved well but carried her tail rather high. Shame she was very out of coat.
Class 203. Open Bitch, Entries: 5 Absentees: 0
1st 7531 – Sh Ch Molokain Hocus Pocus (Mrs ED & Mr E & Mr ST Clack & Eddery & Clack) What a stunner! She is the correct size, beautifully made and carries the very best of coats. Her head is very well balanced, shows slight stop, dark, oval eyes with the most beautiful pleading expression, small correctly placed ears. Strong, arched neck flows into her well laid shoulders and she has length and a good return of upper arm showing plenty of dog in front and a visible forechest. Deep chest, well sprung ribs, short, deep loin, well muscled quarters with moderate turn of stifle. Her tail flows from her topline and is carried on a level with her back. She is such an easy mover covering plenty of ground and carries herself with such elegance and style. BB & BOB. Was pleased to see her make the cut in the group.
2nd 7539 – Sh Ch Ravenho Up Town Girl for Brightmeadow JW (Mr J & Mrs M B Stephens). She has a correctly shaped head but I found her eyes rather small although they are dark and well set. Strong neck but has some throatiness, decent front angulation but she lacks flare over her hips and doesn’t have the well developed quarters of the winner. Good curl but lacks undercoat. Moved OK.
3rd 7525 – Crimblescurl Time to Tango at Wenichones JW (Mrs D & Mr L & Mr M Bain)
Reserve (4th ) 7527 – Jeweller’s Pride Jurajska Gwiazda (Imp Pol) (Mr A, Mr D C & Mr M Batlle, Todd & Rahman)
Very Highly Commended (5th ) 7533 – Molokain Enchanted One (Mrs J Cummings)

O (1,0)
1 & BOB Bain, Mr. Leslie & Mathew & Diane & Mathew Bain & Mrs Diane, Crimblescurl Time To Tango At Wenichones JW. 4-year-old black bitch who epitomises the breed’s hallmark of strength and elegance. Possesses a refined wedge-shaped head with correct proportions from all angles, well-set oval eyes that give a bright, alert expression and small, close-fitting ears well covered in tight curls. Correct scissor bite. Her neck is strong and slightly arched, flowing cleanly into well-laid shoulders and a level topline. Chest deep with well-sprung ribs and elbows tight to the body. Powerful rear with moderate bend of stifle and well-let-down hocks. Coat is good —thick, crisp, and tightly curled all over with no bare patches or frizz. On the move, she showed fluidity and purpose, with a long, ground-covering stride and excellent carriage. An impressive and true-to-type exhibit.
