CCRC Gundog Training/Team Selection Day, 10 May 2026
The Curly Coated Retriever Club (CCRC) recently held a successful day gundog training with professional trainers Emma Stevens (Cunningshot Gundogs) and Adam Peace (Millroe Gundogs) at the helm. The venue was the excellent Red Hall Farm Gundog Training Ground at Betley near Crewe.
The Event was well attended by 10 handlers and 12 Curlies.

The day started with an `all group` session designed to assess the abilities of the dogs and handlers. They were then split into two groups – beginners/ adolescents and novice/ more experienced, each with a trainer. An intense morning of testing and challenging exercises followed as dogs and handlers were put through their paces. Training continued well into the afternoon with water work using two different ponds at the facility.

Whilst the focus of the day was on training, we also took the opportunity to see if there were any potential dogs/handlers for the CCR Club Team who could compete at the forthcoming Minor Breeds Working Test and Game Fair Minor Breeds Challenge – this resulted in some strong candidates for consideration.
A big thank you to all who participated in making the day a success (including those who baked the delicious cakes!). The Club would especially like to thank trainers, Emma and Adam, the hosts of the ground and not forgetting Emily, Lucy & co for their tireless work dummy throwing.

AV Retriever Novice Working Test, 16 May 2026
Jeannette Findlow & Marion (Roughyeds Gold Stick Cellar SGWC) decided against a trip to Scotland, and instead had a fabulous day a working test. Marion loves her gundog work & Jeannette was so proud of how well she did, she said, ‘While others were showing at SKC Marion and I were at an AV Retriever novice working test. Four tests with two retrieves on each, we completed six of the retrieves including blinds, water and walk up. Not too shabby if I do say so…‘
Well done Marion!
Curlies On The Beach
Curlies have been on holiday in North Berwick over the past week. They were in Scotland to attend SKC, but really had more fun on the beach….
There were 10 Curlies, ranging from 13 months to 12 years old – all off lead, and all having fun together, what fabulous characters.

1 Stephens Brightmeadow Rumour Has It JW. If Carlsberg made dogs… this boy I would bring home! He was a deep black upstanding male displaying a dense mass of tight curls lying close to the skin, as his breed’s name suggests. Well-balanced with a wedge-shaped head and oval eyes, his strong jaws displayed a correct bite. He has well-laid-back shoulders, a moderate turn of stifle, and moves with an effortless, powerful gait on round, tight, well-arched toes. He certainly could collect the goose at the end of a hard day’s work. I was delighted to see him win the group. BOB

1 Coutier’s Maycourt Cover Shot. 3-Year-old liver bitch. Liked this girl for her balance of feminine delicacy and sporty athleticism. Good classic curly silhouette on stack. Feminine head with parallel planes and good wedge head. Oval eye of a nice dark colour to compliment shade of coat. Nice, neat ears. Strong and nicely arched neck flowing into strong shoulders, good forechest. Well sprung and deep ribs leading into a slight tuck up. Short, strong loin. Moderate turn of stifle, tail flowed well from croup and of correct length. Coat of good curl. Won her first place on her beautiful movement. Topline was strong, level and held well on the move. Athletic, effortless movement with good reach and drive. RBOB.
2 Edworthy’s Brightmeadow Man of Steel. 2-year-old liver male. Impressive boy, liked him a lot. Masculine head with nice, neat oval eyes, with good colour, gentle expression. Large nostrils. Strong neck going into well laid-back shoulders. Good front bone, without being overly heavy. Excellent front pasterns. Deep chest, ribs well back going into a very strong loin. Nice width of second thigh. Thick strong tail of correct length. Excellent coat Lost out to winner on movement. Looked ok in side profile but didn’t hold top line as well on the move as the winner. Was also hard to determine placement as was a bit messy on the away and towards, which was a shame because he was lovely to go over.
3 Davis & Bradstock Elgars Enigma Tornado Beta Con Redanimo (IMP LTU).

1 Edworthy’s Maycourt Heartbreaker. 5-year-old black male What a boy, caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring. I have seen him around the ring and it’s great to see how he has matured, it’s even better to get my hands on him! Strength through and through. But without anything being over done or exaggerated. The right side of the breed standard for height. Masculine head with lovely gentle expression. Good wedge-shaped head and clean lips. Well arched and strong neck, going into strong shoulders and good front chest. Excellent front bone and strong pasterns. Deep ribs going well back into shirt strong loin. Strong hindquarters gave lovely balance to the front. Strong and well-muscled second thigh. Nice thick tail, flowing freely off the croup and correct length. Very dense, well curled coat. Moved effortlessly around the ring, impressive for a dog of his size in a comparatively small ring. Handler got the best out of him, got into stride instantly and displayed power and grace in side profile. Topline strong and level. Neat and controlled going away and towards. Absolute pleasure to watch BOB.
2 Perkins Maycourt Miss Sweetness at Tengore. 3-year-old black bitch. Nice balance of femininity and strength. Feminine head with gentle but alert expression. Classic wedge shape head, with nice, neat ears. Correct dentition. Strong neck with good arch, going into a well-made front assembly of strong shoulders and forechest. Standing on good bone and well arched feet. Good spring of rib going well back into a gentle tuck up. Rear nicely balanced the front. Moderate turn of stifle. Good croup and correct tail set. Very good coat. Thick protective covering with very small curls. Moved ok with reach and drive in profile- could do with going a bit faster to see full extension. Likewise try and keep straight on the up and back.
3 Courtier Maycourt Take Me To The Top.

1st & BOB Cummings Maycourt Island Girl For Breichside, strong well balanced bitch yet feminine, typical head with good width of skull, good ears, strong neck, great fore chest, firm topline, great croup and tail set, well angulated, handler got the best out of her, in excellent coat & curls.
2 Cummings Molokain Enchanted One, lovely noble head, strong muzzle, correct bite, enough reach of neck, deep rib well angulated quarters, held her topline well, just didn’t move as well was a bit lethargic today.
Tay Valley Gundog Association, 12 October 2025
Judge: Rachel Barney
BIS-PG4 Cummings’ May Court Island Girl For Breichside, good well made CCR, who held her outline at all times & moved out well.
