Thomas wins Best In Show at the Curly Coated Retriever Club Championship Show 2024

CCRC Fun Day, 14 July 2024
We had a lovely day on Sunday, thanks to everyone who came along.
In the morning we had two Gundog training sessions with our Curly Working Co-ordinator and trainer, Heather Barber, and her very able ‘chief dummy thrower’, Will – Puppy/Adolescent first, followed by Novice. Both groups thoroughly enjoyed their sessions and Heather was impressed at the standard in both classes. The dogs in each group not only saw some progress, they were also able to take away individual advice to work on and help with their training going forward.
We had an Obstacle/Agility Course and lots of the dogs had a go – some were better than others, some had never done anything like that before, but they all had fun. Jo McKenzie and Tuppence – Firecurl Pop Goes The Weasel At Beddgelert, were the stars of the day.
There was a Scurry and everyone took part in a timed competition, there was much shouting, whistling and encouragement for the dogs. Our Chairman Nigel Spraggins certainly won the day, with Nornie – Sh Ch Maycourt Hot Love At Tusepo coming first, and her daughter Merry, Tusepo Amazing Love coming second.
We had a ‘Pin the tail on the Curly’ board (with eyes closed)…. I don’t think some of those Curlies would have won any top honours in the Show the day before…..
We also met a lovely couple and their Curly, Darren, who had travelled all the way from Cumbria to meet some fellow Curlies and Curly people, I think it was worth their trip they met lots of new people, joined the club, had a go at some of the activities, and got loads of advice and a full Curly makeover from our top Curly groomer, Jill Stubbs.
We really have had a fab weekend!!!
Online Voting for Judges
Following previous discussions and agreement by members regarding the use of online voting to select judges for the CCR club shows, we have now been able to offer this facility. Fully paid up members of the club have been sent emails enabling them to vote for a judge, available from the CCRC Judging List, that they would like to judge our 2025 Spring Open Show. Just a reminder that the vote is open until noon on 31 July 2024, it’s very easy to do, so don’t forget to submit your vote.

We had our fabulous Club Shop at the show with a large selection of Curly merchandise, including 125 year commemorative items. There was also the Curly Raffle, Curly Tombola, and ofcourse our Curly Rescue Stand.
We had a picnic at lunchtime, with lots of delicious goodies brought along by those attending on the day. We had a short rain shower over the lunchtime period but other than that we were very lucky with the weather. There were some really black clouds around but luckily they floated on by….
We celebrated our Club having been registered with the Kennel Club since 1899, and everyone had a piece of our fabulous cake to commemorate 125 years…

And it didn’t rain!!!!‘
Canine Blood Donation
Karen Thursz has told us about the wonderful donation her Curly, Ash – Crimblescurl Black Ash, makes to help others in need.
Karen told us,
‘My beautiful, clever, girl Ash gave her 5th blood donation last weekend. She was an absolute star. She was calm and relaxed. She lay on the table with her leg in the air having her tummy rubbed by the nurse as she gave her blood to help save up to another 4 dogs lives.
So proud of my gorgeous girl.’
What a truly amazing gift Karen & Ash…!

Judge: Mr Leslie Bain (Wenichones)
I must start by thanking Secretary, Leila Tarabad, and her committee for inviting me to judge at their first show held in Rutland Showground. This was one of the very best venues I have been to and one of the most friendly shows too. It was a real honour to judge the Curlies there.
The atmosphere was excellent around the ring and thank you to the exhibitors for their sporting acceptance of my decisions.
Thanks also to those who entered their dogs under me it was a real privilege to go over such a quality entry. We must as breed custodians address the hind movement and tail carriage currently prevalent in the breed with many dogs moving close behind and carrying tails too high.
I was delighted to see both my Best of Breed and my Best Puppy shortlisted in their respective groups.
