NEFRA Training Day, 24 May 2026
We have been contacted by the Northern England Flatcoated Retriever Association – following the success of their Spring Working Test they have decided to hold at training day at the same venue and have invited the minor breed clubs to join them. They have stated that they have emailed those who entered the working test, and have also asked us to share the details with our members.
The training day will be held at Redhall Farm, Crewe.
The full-day session will be led by Garry Ellison, offering an excellent opportunity to learn from an experienced trainer. To ensure a high-quality experience, the group will be limited to just 8 participants. Critiques

East Anglian Gundog Society, 3 April 2026
Judge: Lesley McCourt (Woodspa)
Junior 2
1st Pavitt, Pavitt, Whitehead & Whitehead Foxriever Fire Cracker – I thought this a smart 17 month black male. His head is still developing but it’s of the correct wedge shape. He makes a good shape when stacked with strong neck leading into level topline, he is well off for depth. He is well boned, with neat feet. He moved out well in profile. RBOB
2nd Sutton, Whitehead & Whitehead Foxriever Fire Fly – Litter mate to 1, this liver male has a lovely masculine head, I liked his substance, correct length of neck, straight in front, he is well boned with good feet. He wasn’t showing himself off today, so was losing his topline. He moved well in profile.
Post Graduate 1
1st Sutton, Whitehead & Whitehead Foxriever Immortal Spirit – I was impressed with this rising two years black male. He has a lovely outline of correct proportions. Super masculine head that is of the correct shape. He flows from his strong muscular neck to his tail. He is well off for body having good depth and fore chest, ribs well sprung, good angulation both front and rear with good width of thigh and moderately bent stifle. His movement is powerful in profile with good extension and is parallel. No hesitation in awarding him BOB and pleased to see him make the short list for BIS.
Open 2
1st Sutton, Whitehead & Whitehead Foxriever Grey Ghost SGWC – This three-year-old liver dog is all male. He is handsome in head; his neck is of good length and muscular. His body is well made with plenty of substance, deep through chest with well sprung ribs. Bone is strong with tight feet. Rear quarters are muscular with moderately bent stifle and good width of thigh. He moved out well.
2nd Whitehead, Whitehead & Sutton Foxriever Sea Fyre JW – This is a lovely feminine black bitch, that I thought would be my winner on first inspection. Her head is correctly shaped, when stood she is of correct proportions, moderate length of neck, into level topline. Her chest is deep and she is well angled at both ends, with good bend of stifle. I just preferred the rear movement and tail carriage of 1.

Thank you for the invitation to judge these 2 very special breeds. I am extremely humbled to the exhibitors who chose to go under me in my maiden show. Thank you for your trust.
Puppy (2/1)
1 Spraggins Tusepo Miss Scarlett 11 months female black I have admired this young lady from across the ring since her debut and am so pleased to have finally got my hands on her! Only 11 months old but everything in the right place. Strong and athletic but with feminine delicacy. When she stood still, she presented a classic curly silhouette. Lovely feminine head with good curly wedge shape. Nice, neat, small ears. Alert and intelligent expression. Well-made front assembly was what clinched the BOB for me in the challenge. Strong, clean neck flowing into well laid-back shoulders. Correct front angulation giving a good forechest, nice deep ribs going well back into a short coupling and slight tuck up. Standing on good, straight front bone. Feet were well arched with nice, neat nails and slight sloping pasterns. Hind quarters gave good balance to the front with a moderate bend of stifle. Well-muscled. Tail flowed nicely from topline and of correct length. Coat of good crisp tight curls. Moved freely and with spirit. Effortless grace. Good front extension and drive. Tail carried straight on the move. Looked like she could run all day. Cannot wait to see what she achieves when fully matured. BOB BPIB
Junior (2/1)
1 Pavitt, Pavitt, Whitehead & Whitehead Foxriever Fire cracker (AI) 17-month male, black Masculine looking boy, up to size. Little nervy when going over but stood still for me. Good wedge-shaped head with nice, neat ears. Good oval eye with gentle expression. Strong free flowing neck, shoulders could have been a little further back. Chest developed, ribs deep and well sprung. Standing on strong, straight front leg and well arched feet. Hindquarters showed strength and development. Good turn of stifle and nice width of second thigh. Moved with power and strength, effortless gait. Maintained strong top line on the move and tail carried well. Excellent tight crisp curl. RBOB
2 Sutton, Whitehead & Whitehead Foxriever Fire Fly (AI) 17-month male, liver Litter mate to winner. Strong masculine dog. Upper end of breed standard in height but remained balanced and proportioned for size. Strong head with wedge shape and nice, neat ears. Would prefer a darker eye. Very strong neck, flowing into well laid shoulders. Deep ribs, going well back. Plenty of front bone and well arched feet. Rear assembly balanced the front. Good turn of stifle and good width of second thigh. Held his topline well on the move but didn’t have the effortless drive of the winner. Coat a lovely dark shade of liver. Really excellent tight individual curls. Best coat of the day.

Gundog Group
Judge: Aidan McKiernan
It was an honour to judge the Gundog Group what a quality group. I shortlisted to ten dogs, all excellent exhibits and all worthy of top honours and champion titles.
I eventually chose the stunning Curly Coated Retriever male Thygesen Mr Jostein Skare-Norsk Ch Skaringens Galileo III. He caught my eye immediately in entering the ring with his powerful reach and drive, covering the ground effortlessly, to go over he didn’t disappoint, he excelled in type and style, beautiful wedge shaped head, dark eye and ear set, strong neck into correct well angulated shoulders, deep in chest, correct coat, correct topline and tailset effortless powerful gait, shown in super hard condition and handled to perfection.

Puppy
1 Spraggins, Tusepo Miss Scarlett. RBB BPIB/ A feminine 11-month-old puppy bitch of pleasing type and outline. Typical head and expression. Straight forelegs with good feet. Coat of correct texture. Moved freely and soundly. Naturally still immature and would benefit from further development in body, but shows promise for the future.
Junior
1 Kear & Morrey, Foxriever Infinite Spirit (AI) Of good type. Good head and eye, with a strong neck, clean through the throat. Well laid shoulders. A little longer in leg at present and still immature in outline. Straight forelegs, good feet, and correct coat. Not fully settled on the move, but showed enough quality to take the class today. Should improve with maturity.
Post Graduate
1 Clayton Violeta Borboleta Jacques Du Moulin Du Paulu. Lovely head and kind eye. Well balanced body with good bone and tight, well arched feet. Coat in good order with crisp curls lying close to the skin. Moved well with an effortless, ground-covering action. BOB

Open (3,1)
1 Edworthy’s Maycourt Heartbreaker ShCEx 4 year old boy with plenty to show off. A lovely expressive head, well chiselled arches and pronounced occiput. Well laid back shoulders, deep through chest with plenty of lung room and well boned front. Beautifully balanced in profile, correct angles front and rear not over stretched when stacked. RBOB
2 Davies and Bradstock’s Maycourt Kashmir Con Redamino 4 year old black dog, a little lighter built than 1st. Good angles front and rear, clean lines and held his top line well on the move. A nice dog that came up against strong opposition today.
